Love In Action

The gentle early springtime sun brought everything to life in the Anza Borrego desert scene in Southern California. Bright little flowers formed a carpet of color, as though awaiting the Blue Lotus Feet of our Lord to be a soft cushion. How sprightly were the small birds, as they sprang from one branch to another, with full awareness of their freedom! All of this wonderland was covered with a delicate blue sky that played hide and seek with the surrounding mountains.

While enthralled with all of this nature scented with desert perfumes, I seemed to nave a question filtering through my mind, as to whether or not I would bathe in the placidly clear waters of my friend’s swimming pool. Then, I found myself almost unthinkingly turning away from the pool area and entering the precincts of the quiet cool house. I could see the pool reflecting the sky, through the large plate glass windows.

It was then I felt the meditative heartstrings enticing me from within. I had no sooner started the inward journey when Baba began to talk to me. It is His message which I would like to share with you now.

“Bathe in the water pool, for, is it not Ganga water? That water out there, too, is from God. Why should one differentiate as to one water’s spiritual benefit from that of another body of water?

Bathe with a divine feeling of receiving an inner purification for the water thus used is being blessed by Me. Remember that all water used to cleanse the temple of the soul is holy water. It can draw you closer to Me wherever you are, just as mother Ganges has done from age to age. Does not all water come down from the `Himalayas of the Heavens’, from whence all purity originates? How much more comforting it is to know that one can always bathe in the bliss of the Lord! I bathe the silver image of Sai Baba of Shirdi with a downfall of Divine Ash which pours right from My Heart. I do that ceremony with great joy and love. Should not all have that same loving attitude toward their living temples whether they are bathing it, giving it food or simply being good to it?

Take every opportunity to be closer to Me. When you partake of daily food, do so as in prayer, for, I am also with you providing the food of Divinity. When breath is taken into the body, know that I am also there, pouring in life sustaining Prana. When you are serving another, always know that I am there also being served. Never separate yourself from Me, whatever you are doing.”

There was something extraordinary about the pool as I entered it. The water seemed to come alive as it carried out its divine purpose. The Lord appeared present in the form of colorful mountains. The feeling within was so beautiful. It felt like the angels in heaven had been asked by the Lord to witness the spiritual merging and emerging. Baba’s words came true, for the blessings from my experience in “Mother Ganges” have stayed with me.

Since that sweet encounter with the Lord. I have discovered how much His presence exists when breaking bread with Him at the table. There now seems to be less hurry. Why try to end quickly dining with my Beloved?

Now, I look back and ask myself why I waited so long in this body temple to open my heart to His Heart. May we live ever closer to Him as the sands of time run out.

Rama’s incarnation was to lay down norms of life to observe and follow. He was the Ideal Man with qualities and virtues everyman could earn and imbibe. Rama along with His three brothers represented the four primal goals of man, says Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Rama is a Name that is sweeter than all the sweet things in Nature imbibed alone or together. It can never cloy on the tongue or mind. It has vast mysterious mystic potentialities to elevate man. So, one must endeavour to keep the mind ever dwelling on it. The story of Rama—The Ramayana—is but another version of the Vedas.

In fact, it is said that the Vedas incarnated as the Ramayana, in order to help in the destruction of evil and the revival of righteous living, tasks which the Lord took upon Himself during His human career as Rama. Why! Rama and his three brothers are from one point of view the Four Vedas in human form.

The Yajur Veda lays down the rights and duties of man, the Dharma which ensures Peace and Prosperity for him, both here and hereafter. So, it is represented by Rama Himself, for He put on the vesture of manhood in order to establish and exemplify Dharma.

“Ramo Vigrahavaan Dharmah” is how the Ramayana desc ribed Him. —”Rama, the embodied Dharma.” The Rg Veda enshrines mantras or potent formulae. It elucidates them and elaborates their meanings. These mantras have the mantra ‘Rama’ as their crown.

And Brother Lakshmana, who repeated it, recited it and relied on it, for everything in life and beyond, is indeed the embodiment of the Rg Veda. He teaches mankind that the Rama mantra confers on man the Constant Presence of the Lord. The same Veda contains songs in praise of Creation and the Creator and through adoration sublimated in song, the Lord yields Grace.

Bharata whose every thought, word and deed was an act of thanksgiving, a paean of praise dedicated to Rama, was the Sama Veda Itself. Then, we have the Atharvana Veda which is a collection of medical and ritual details, of charms and protective amulets to overcome internal and external foes.

Shatrughna, whose every name means `the destroyer of foes’ is therefore appropriately the avatar of the Atharvana Veda. This Veda enables man to c onquer evil habits, attitudes and tendencies, so that he can listen to the Voice of God and gladly translate the words into daily life. Shatrughna demonstrated by his humility, loyalty and devotion how he had won victory over his ego, greed and anger.

Very often the mistake is committed of forgetting that Rama came, in order to lay down the norms of life and that His Life has to be observed and followed by mankind. He is the ideal Man, with qualities and virtues which every man can earn to elevate himself. Mere worship, empty adoration is not what the Avatar expects.

Rama underwent trouble, disappointment and distress like any man, in order to show that joy is but an interval between two griefs, that grief is a challenge, a test, a lesson. He held forth the ideal relationship between son and father, husband and wife, brother and brother, friend and friend, ally and enemy and even man and beast.

The Ramayana teaches also that, as a consequence of the individual’s accumulated Karma consequence, children of the same mother may have opposite character and careers. The waters of a pond breed leeches as well as lotuses. Vali and Sugriva were brothers! So were Ravana and Vibhishana!

From another point of view, Rama and the brothers can be understood as models of the four primal goals of Man—the Purusharthas. Of these Rama was Dharma (Righteousness); Lakshmana was Artha (Prosperity); Bharata was Karma (Fulfillment of Desires) and Shatrughna was Moksha (Liberation).

These four are the progeny of every human being, Dasaratha (ten chariot leader). Man having five sense organs of perception and five senses of action ruling over Ayodhya, the City that is impregnable (the heart wherein God resides).

These four goals have to be reduced to two pairs—Dharma Artha and Kama Moksha: man must struggle to attain prosperity only through righteous ways. The prosperity should be used to achieve and maintain Dharma. This is the reason why Lakshmana follows in the footsteps of Rama. He served as the right hand of Rama and for Rama’s sake, Lakshmana bore all travails and agonies with a smile on his lips.

When the demon Kabandha had both Rama and Lakshmana in his deadly clasp, Lakshmana offered to stay in those arms, advising Rama to escape and live. This is the reason why, when Lakshmana fell unconscious on the battlefield and could not be revived, Rama lamented, “Perhaps I may get another Sita, if this Sita passes away, but, O Lakshmana, I can nowhere get another brother like you.”

Rama also shared with Bharata the love that Lakshmana poured on Him so profusely. He told Bharata who prayed to him, with tears in his eyes, to return to Ayodhya as its ruler, “No. Father has ordered me to rule over the forests, helping the anchorites and hermits and saving them from the inroads of Demonic hordes. He has willed that you should rule over the Kingdom of Ayodhya. Let us both be loyal to him.” That was the expression of His fraternal Love.

The next pair of Purusharthas is Kama and Moksha; the only Desire worth entertaining and pursuing is the Desire for Liberation. Bharata had it and Shatrughna shared it.

After the long pilgrimage to the shrines and holy spots of Bharat, Rama had a few years, until he was aged fourteen, of apparent introspection and solitude. He disliked food and regal apparel. He was not interested in materials and men. He waved his fingers and palms for no clear reason; he wrote on the air only He knew what. He laughed without reason.

In short, His actions and movements were exactly the same as Sai Baba’s (mine) when He (I) too was in His (my) early teens. Vasishta attempted to bring His mind back to normalcy but that was only a stage which all Avatars are in, before they enter upon the task for which they have come down. Those years, the Avatar was designing His Master Plan.

At the end of that period, the sage Viswamitra arrived at the Palace, asking Dasaratha to send Rama (and the inseparable Lakshmana) with him, to save the hermits from the demonic gangs who desecrated Vedic rites. The Plan started unfolding.

It is He that makes you drink the amrita of eternity, timelessness, fearlessness, desirelessness, I’lessness, and complete sweet forgetfulness.~Sri Sathya Sai Chalisa

A child depends upon his mother, without a single question of doubt. This dependency grows to be a “need”, the “need”, eventually depicting a selfish attachment, and it is this relationship in which you expect all that you give, that you recognize and accept as “love”. How can love such as this bring peace and bliss, when you, My dears, are in constant fear of your needs being unfulfilled, when you live in constant worry that you are not receiving the love you give, and when in every step you lack confidence and doubt the love you think you have found? Yes! You have merely developed momentary pleasure, and you have made this minute of your life your desire to re-experience this past, once again, in the future.

You think you have reached the limits of love – but love has no limits. You have equated this temporary love to God’s love, but God’s love does not measure with the balance of “give” and “take”. His love of bliss lies in fulfilling each of your needs, and it is only your smile of gratitude that He will take. His peace lies in accepting your discontented mind and taking back with Him your web of fearful anxieties. His mission lies in giving Himself to you and in taking back with Him your mask of pride that has inhibited you to be your “self”, until now. Learn, My dears, not to demand, but to accept that which is given with sincere thankfulness – even if in the gift received, lies deceit, harshness, and pain – accept all, with no resentment, and give yourselves, fully, with the same love, same understanding and with an unchanging gratitude to all who have helped you to dismiss the difference. Those who presented to you their “weakness” must also be thought of as God, for you were able to recognize and develop your strength only through their handicaps.

Your disease of the “pain of pride” can be cured, today, by convincing the mind that the downfall of pain lies in its acceptance of God in all. You must rise above the hatred that pinches your heart and constricts it to widen its arms to embrace all of God’s forms.

The tongue that speaks only the language of “no” must learn only the one word that must encompass its whole language – Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes to pleasure, and yes to pain, – Yes to good, and yes to bad, – Yes to acceptance and yes to rejection. It must be yes, at all times, for “yes” to all, is “yes” to Me! God, being the perfect one, accepts and lives within you and around you, at all times, never saying “no” to His child of love.

Learn to eat with the poor, sleep with the worries of the rich, play with the good, and serve the ones that are lost. Let each criticism be the change, and let each praise be your strength to persevere. Love all, for your simple need to be with Me and none other. Love all, without a single doubt, for this doubt is only your strength that is failing to love with perfection. And what is this perfection in love? It is love that “gives” in ‘silence’, in the secret of sacrifice, in the joyful pain of endurance, in persevering patience, and takes with it the bliss and the strength of giving even more. Yes! That is love dressed in perfection – love that is held in a heart of God!

There is no need to wait for a new year to bring new tidings. Every moment is new. Many are wondering what troubles and losses the New Year will bring. But the year is not responsible for all our troubles and difficulties. Only our conduct is responsible. If our actions are good, the results will be good. Bad actions lead to bad consequences.

People think that good and bad are related to time. It is not that way. Their thoughts are the cause. Hence, they should develop good thoughts and do good deeds. People should cherish good feelings and associate with good people.

People should realize the preciousness of Time. People waste most of the time available. Time should be used always for right purposes. That is the foremost duty of every man. Waste of time is waste of life. The Lord of Time protects those who take refuge in Him, even against the Lord of Death, Kala.

A nation’s prosperity is dependent on how people use their time in the performance of good actions. The challenge for humanity is lack of clarity, motivation and laziness. You may be intelligent, but if you do not act nothing is going to happen. This denies us the ability to offer our gifts to the world. Time wasted is Life wasted says Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai.

“Also, examine the usage of time. One should not waste time. Time should be spent in a useful manner. Time should be sanctified because everything in this creation is dependent on time. Even our scriptures extol God as ‘Kaalaya namaha. Kaalaatheethaya namaha (Salutations to the One who is the embodiment of Time and who transcends Time).'” – Sathya Sai

“Time is an essential part of our life. Do not defile time by gossiping and unnecessary talk. The truth behind the saying “Don’t waste time” is that no time should be wasted in evil thoughts and acts. Instead, make use of time in an efficient way.” – Sathya Sai

Om Namah Shivaya

Om Namah Shivaya

He has abundant hair with the moon adorning His head,
The cool water of the Ganga flowing between the matted locks,
With His radiant eye of wisdom in the middle of the forehead,
And the purple neck gleaming like the sheen of a blackberry.
He wears serpent bracelets and a snake belt,
His entire body is smeared with Vibhuti,
His forehead is adorned with a kumkum dot,
His ruddy lips glow with the juice of the betel,
Diamond-studded gold earrings dangle from His ears
And His whole swarthy body glows with divine effulgence.
